The Fonix 2016

Hi bloggers!

The Ninth English Competition for Catalan Schools (THE FONIX 2016) is designed to promote the use of English among schools students through a fun and educational competition.

The competition has been very hard in school this year, because some students had the same punctuation and we had to raffle of their names to choose the winner.

Here you have the names of the winners (in capital letters the person who went to the local exam representing the school).

1st ESO:  EMMA G. C. (A)

2nd ESO: MARIA A. P.  (A)

3rd ESO:  Aina L. P. (A), Andrea S. C. (B) and DAVID P. G. (B)

4th ESO: Félix M. C. (B) and CLAUDIA M. G. (A).

Unluckily, Maria wasn't in the picture because she was ill, and she couldn't go to the exam on Saturday. We wish her a fast recovery, and we are looking forward to seeing her in school again.

Here you have the winners of the local stage in the school before the exam on the 27th February!! We are sure they did their best!!!

Black History Month

Hello!
I’m going to talk about a topic that I love, the Black History Month. Officially, February is the month in which people in the USA, celebrates the Black History of their country.
The origin of this celebration is in the year 1915, when the Association for the study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), known today as the Association for the study of African American Life and History (ASALH), decided to sponsor a Negro History week, choosing the second week of February. It coincides with Abraham Lincoln's and Frederick Douglass', an anti-slavery activist, death. Nowadays, the White House has decided to celebrate the history of Black people, one month.
In this month, the students in school, learn more about the history of black people. At the beginning they came to America like slaves, but now they are present in the society and in their country too. They study great figures like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., or Malcolm X, the leader of the black power movement, that helps the black man to achieve his freedom. This celebration is a second birthday for many people, because they can know the past of their people, and understand the situation that the Negroes have in the country now.

The American society changes every day. For me, the best Black History Month, was when Obama entered in the White House, and became the first African American president of the USA. Obama showed to the world that the black man is in the same level as the white man. He pretends to break barriers and make easy the future of Negroes. I love this month, for me it is a second birthday, too. I’m proud to be black!

Chasing Mavericks, the Film

Hi bloggers!

This film is based on a true story.

Jay (Jonny Weston) is a boy who leaves his father and has to live with his mother. She does not pay much attention to him, and soon it appears in his life a neighbor that he idolizes and decides to follow their steps in extreme surfing.
Jay soon learns that the mythical waves known as the "Mavericks" are close to where he lives. He asks his neighbor Frosty(Gerard Butler) to train him to survive this phenomenon, and they begin this adventure together.

For me this film is the evidence that if you want, you can.

Sports in Catalonia

Hi bloggers!

I’m going to talk about Spain and sports nowadays. Spain is now recognized as one country that wins many medals. Many of these athletes are Catalans for example Pau and Marc Gasol, two brothers that are playing in the NBA. They have been chosen as All Stars being the only foreigners. Another example is Mireia Belmonte, she was born in Badalona. She is one of the best swimmers of the moment. Maybe you could be the next famous sportsman or woman!!

Saint Valentine's Day

Last Sunday was Saint Valentine’s Day;  did you give any present to your girlfriend or wife?
If you didn't do it, don’t worry, you have a lot of time to show your love during the rest of the year.
Saint Valentine’s Day is a celebration celebrated on February 14 each year. There are several theories about it, one of this says it's the time when birds pair up and mate in the Nordic countries. This is the reason why this period is seen as a symbol of love and creation.

Many people think that Saint Valentine's Day is celebrated not long ago, that it is a celebration created by the big shopping centres, but it's origin begins back in the Roman Empire, when the emperor Claudius II decided to ban the celebration of marriages for young people. When the priest Valentin found it out, he celebrated secret marriages for young people.

My favourite style is  crawl, for me it's the easiest. Swimming is also used in many cases for rehabilitation. For all these reasons it is my favorite sport!

"Ocho apellidos vascos", the film

Hi bloggers,

Today in my part of this blog I'm gonna talk to you about a comedy film which was very successful as it portrayed a typical humor Basque and Andalusian.

The film talks about Rafa who has never left his native city Seville, Andalusia, until he mets a Basque girl. He follows her to Euskadi. A series of misunderstandings forces Rafa to impersonate a full-blooded Basque.

From my point of view, the secret of the success in this film,  was a new form for having a good time and forget about our personal problems.

Brian Freeman and his books

Brian Freeman (Chicago 1963) has a degree in the English Language and he has worked in various literary magazines writing opinions, short stories and tales.
His first novel was Inmoral, published in 2005, which won the Macavity Award.

I have read four of his books, and I have to say that they have become my favourite books, but certainly the best one for me is "El verano del candidato."

The Respiratory System

This week, the 2nd ESO students of the optional science subject did an exercise about the respiratory system.
This exercise consists of checking our heartbeat and breathing before walking, after walking, and after running during 2 minutes for each exercise.
With this activity, we checked our heartbeat and breathing and we discovered that after doing exercise, our heartbeat and breathing were higher than before.
During this class, we enjoyed and rediscovered the changes that occur when you run!!
