The United Nations Project 1st ESO Session 1 and 2

In my first week with 1st ESO students I presented my country, Greece and I showed them the Greek alphabet along with some common Greek words. After that I answered all their questions about me and about Greece in order to create a friendly climate in the classroom. Then, I asked them to tell me what they like about Spain and in this way I got to learn your country a little bit better. Getting into the main event, I explained to the students what the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are and what is their cause. With 1st ESO we focused on the SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production. Since this SDG is difficult to explain and difficult for them to understand the situation, I pointed with simple words the 3 main issues, which are water, food and energy. After having a good conversation with the students about these issues, we focused on other SDGs and spotted the serious problems that our Earth faces right now such as poverty, environmental destruction and lack of quality education. Having talked about all these things the students felt like they should do something about the situation and we, right now are working on the poster project. It is all about each student to create his poster delivering his message. The second week is closing with a voting by the students themselves and the best posters will be announced to the school.

The United Nations Project: Presentation

My name is Lazaros, I am 19 years old and I come from Greece. Studying business in the University of Macedonia an opportunity appeared so I came to Barcelona as a volunteer to share my thoughts about sustainable development with young people. Using activities and projects I am trying to make students aware about the problems our earth faces at this moment and motivate them to do something about it. The most important thing for me is for the students to understand how serious this is and how it will affect people in such a sort time period. For me, if they understand this they will feel like the need to do something, because this is what happened to me. In this case i will try to get them familiar with organisations like AIESEC who encourage and guide people who want to be part of the campaign designed to change this planet once and for all.

In my first 2 weeks here i met 3rd and 4th ESO's students.

The Five Kingdoms

During the last weeks, the boys and girls of 1st E.S.O have done a biology project in base groups. During this project, we have been studying the five kingdoms. They are: The protist kingdom, animal kingdom, plant kingdom, fungi kingdom and monera kingdom. We have been working on all aspects of these kingdoms, reviewing the information, and practicing a lot. In order to choose which group would make each kingdom we made a raffle. We had three hours to prepare a Power Point and two hours to explain the expositions.
During these three hours we had Amy with us, a conversation assistant who came to help us. We have practice a lot of English with her. During this week we are exposing our Power Points and we have been taken notes from the expositions of our mates. In these notes we write specific information that our teacher asked us before. The notes will be part of the final mark.
We have enjoyed and learnt a lot!!!!

6th English Day

Last Friday we celebrated the 6th English Day at school. There were many workshops and activities to learn and have fun!

1. Sherlock Holmes' Activity
Pupils became investigators in this workshop. They could choose one of the four games to play together thanks to their visual perception which was determining factor in all of them. Some of the activities were: spot the difference, test your memory, the power of obervation or handwriting analysis.

2. Watson's Activity
Who is the murderer??? And the victim? Was there any witness? Help Dr Watson to solve the crime.

3. Queen of Hearts' Activity
Are you ready to find the correct card? Remember that if you failed, the Queen can get angry and then it could be possible that she says:  OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!!

4. Alice's Activity
You must be very clever to complete this activity because you have to solve some of the most famous English riddles.
If you have it, you want to share it. If you share it, you don't have it. What is it?” A secret.

5. The Time Traveller's Activity
We use his time machine to travel to the Victorian era. What did we know about it? We just needed to complete a Kahoot and compete to be the winners!

6. The Monkey's Activity
We become actors and actresses in this activity and we role-played some scenes of the Victorian novels.

7. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde's Activity
Science is very powerful!!! That is what Dr Jekyll taught us with some experiments. We made invisible a coin, we could blow up a balloon without blowing, and we did many incredible things just like real scientists.

8. The Maid's Activity
It was time for Arts&Crafts, so we developed our artistic skills. We used the collage technique to fill the characters' silhouette.

9. The Bennet's Sisters' Activity
One of the most popular ways of having fun during the Victorian Era was dancing in balls. It was not easy to follow the steps but Elisabeth and Jane helped us a lot!

9. The Writer's Activity
The Writer was a gentleman and he explained us how to play French Criquet. It was very funny and we felt as if we were in the British landscape for just some moments.

11 and 12. Dracula and his Victim's Activity
That was the most dangerous activity as Dracula was trying to create an army of vampires to destroy the world. If we didn't want to be a new victim, we need to run very fast.

TO BE CONTINUED!!!! NEXT WEEK THE VIDEOS!!!

The 5th English Day

Hi bloggers!
The 5th English Week was held from 6th to 10th February in our school. The topic was Harry Potter and we transformed the school in Hogwarts the last day.
All the students were divided into the four houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, so they have to compete to win the Cup of the Tournament. To achieve this objective, they had to complete some activities with the best punctuation. Here you have them:
-       Voldemort and the Dark Mark.

-       Bellatrix and the Spells.
-       Prof Trelawney and Prof Lupin with the cryptic messages.
-       Prof. Lockhart and the crosswords.
-       Moaning Myrtle and the role-plays
-       Prof McGonagall and Prof Sprout in the Transfiguration class.
-       Sirius Black and Azkaban
-       Hagrid and the Magical Creatures
-       Madam Hooch and the soundtrack
-    Dolores Umbridge and the decorations
-       Rita Skeeter and Mad-eye Moody with the news
-       Cedric and Dumbledore with Quidditch
We really had fun, it was an amazing and magical day! We’re waiting anxiously for the 6th English day next year!!!

The Fire

Hi bloggers!

Can you guess why the fire was such an important discovery in the Prehistory? Did you know that they made it using a bow and a string?

These are some of the questions we have been trying to solve in Time Tunnel classes, with the students of 1st ESO.  To make it easier we played and interactive game, and we made fire!!!! It was just virtually, don't panic!!

Our Coat of Arms

As we were studying the Medieval Ages, the students of Time Tunnel in 1st ESO have designed in groups their coat of arms.  In that time, few people could read or write, so pictures were very important to communicate ideas.

Knights especially depended of pictures to express their identity. Each of these pictures had a especial meaning and when they were combined, they formed a Coat of Arms.

For this project, they follow these steps:

The Fonix 2016

Hi bloggers!

The Ninth English Competition for Catalan Schools (THE FONIX 2016) is designed to promote the use of English among schools students through a fun and educational competition.

The competition has been very hard in school this year, because some students had the same punctuation and we had to raffle of their names to choose the winner.

Here you have the names of the winners (in capital letters the person who went to the local exam representing the school).

1st ESO:  EMMA G. C. (A)

2nd ESO: MARIA A. P.  (A)

3rd ESO:  Aina L. P. (A), Andrea S. C. (B) and DAVID P. G. (B)

4th ESO: Félix M. C. (B) and CLAUDIA M. G. (A).

Unluckily, Maria wasn't in the picture because she was ill, and she couldn't go to the exam on Saturday. We wish her a fast recovery, and we are looking forward to seeing her in school again.

Here you have the winners of the local stage in the school before the exam on the 27th February!! We are sure they did their best!!!

Maths with Nicolle!!

First, the children headed down to the theatre to view a presentation on polygons created by Nicolle.

She explained the different polygons within geometry. She displayed a polygon family tree to show the relationship of each shape.
Next, she discussed triangles. Triangles are classified by their sides-equilateral, isosceles, and scalene- or classified by their angles- acute, obtuse, and right. There was a video in English which helped the students understand the terms better.

Then, she defined quadrilateral and displayed more charts. There was a video in English about quadrilaterals as well.

At the end of class the students formed polygons with a string. Each student would be an angle. For example, five students made a hexagon. Then a student with a different color of string would show the different shapes inside the hexagon by connecting different angles to one another. From a hexagon, the different polygons illustrated were triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids. This activity enabled the students to be active and view the different polygons.

This term, the students of Time Tunnel have studied the Medieval Ages and they have pretended to be knights. Every knight had a coat of arms with a motto and they have created their own one!! Can you see them??? Watch the video and check it!!
